Building a World of Good: Completed Projects

Kenya

  • Until 2006, artisans in the Nyabigena soapstone carving community in Kenya had to walk three hours a day to access clean water. Thanks to a World of Good grant, the artisans now have two freshwater wells right in their community. Some have used the time they have saved to start a community garden and a sewing cooperative.

India

  • In Coimbatore, India, artisans attend a free clinic as part of their membership in the Shiva Shakthi sewing cooperative. Using a World of Good grant, the clinic purchased a blood analyzer to process blood samples on-site, improving the efficiency of blood tests and leading to quicker diagnoses and better healthcare for the artisans.
  • In 2006, a World of Good grant funded educational toys and equipment for a preschool in an artisan community in India. The children of the artisans attend the preschool while their mothers embroider pouches, totes, and slings nearby.
  • A World of Good artisan group in Kolkata, India, covers the cost of emergency medical care for its artisans. A World of Good grant has made non-emergency healthcare accessible by funding the equipment to create an on-site examination room for routine check-ups.

Guatemala

  • A pair of World of Good grants provided building materials and a computer lab for a new school in San Antonio, Guatemala. The school serves the children of artisans who weave baskets and sew bags for World of Good.
  • Hurricaine Stan ravaged the water system in the Guatemalan community of Zaput in 2005, leaving the artisans there without access to clean drinking water. A World of Good grant provided the resources to rebuild and improve the water system that serves the whole community.

South Africa

  • A World of Good grant equipt artisans in South Africa with a computer lab to provide them access to information, resources, and a wider professional network. Says one artisan, “I only started appreciating computers when I started learning how to use them after the donation. I can now check my e-mail and I have also subscribed for art and crafts articles. I’ve moved from being an ordinary man in the wire and bead industry into an upcoming craft designer.”

Vietnam

  • Artisans in Ha Tay province in Vietnam received a World of Good grant to purchase furniture for a preschool in their community. This project benefits children of artisans who make shell jewelry for World of Good.

Indonesia

  • The artisans who make recycled paper journals for World of Good received a grant in 2006 to refurbish a kindergarten in their community in Bali. The grant funded the purchase of learning materials, playground equipment, bookshelves, and art supplies that will support the kindergarten’s curriculum and develop the children’s creativity.
